Machame Route - Climb Mount Kilimanjaro
Reaching the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro via the Machame Route offers a remarkable adventure filled with natural beauty and effective acclimatization strategies. This popular trek attracts adventurers worldwide seeking both challenge and stunning vistas. Spanning approximately 6-7 days, trekkers traverse diverse landscapes, from lush tropical rainforests to alpine heathlands and the expansive Shira Plateau, before ascending towards Uhuru Peak, Africa’s highest point. Known as the «Whiskey Route» for its more gradual ascent profile, the Machame Route provides a unique journey for exploring Kilimanjaro’s majestic landscapes while immersing oneself in its rich natural allure.

Distance: 9,840ft / 3000m
Accommodation: Machame hut (Fullboard)
Drive to the Kilimanjaro National Park gate at Marangu for entry registration. Start the trek to Machame hut through thick rain forest. Have packed lunch on the way. Dinner and retire for the day.
Distance: 12,470 ft / 3800 m
Accommodation: Shira hut (Full-board)
Ascend to Shira Hut past the Shira plateau and through ridges and valleys. Stay here overnight.
Distance: 12,960 ft / 3950 m
Accommodation: Barranco camp (Full-board)
Head eastward to a junction where we continue to Lava Tower Campsite (14,760ft/4500m), then descend to Barranco camp thus allowing your body to adjust to altitude change. Take the day’s rest here.
Distance: 15,090 ft / 4600 m
Accommodation: Barafu camp (Full-board)
Across the Karanga Valley and ascend to Barafu campsite. Have dinner and take the day’s rest ready for the hike to the summit.
Note:
An extra day for acclimatization can be added by staying overnight at Karanga camp then proceed to Barafu camp the next day.
Distance: 19,340 ft / 5895 m
Accommodation: Mweka hut (Fullboard)
Start at mid-night for the Summit (Uhuru peak) arriving at sunrise. Descend back to Barafu for breakfast then further down to Mweka Hut. Have lunch and spend the rest of the day relaxing.
Note:
An extra day for acclimatization can be added by staying overnight at Karanga Camp before proceeding to Barafu Camp the next day.
Accommodation: Kilimanjaro Impala Hotel (Bed&Breakfast)
After Breakfast, descend to the park gate where a vehicle awaits to transfer you to the hotel in town.
